Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Waste Management Officer to join our dynamic team in Portsmouth, England. This critical on-site role involves overseeing daily waste management operations, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, and implementing efficient waste reduction and recycling strategies. The successful candidate will be instrumental in maintaining high operational standards, supervising a team, and contributing to Veolia’s mission of ecological transformation. Key Responsibilities
- Manage and supervise daily waste collection, sorting, and disposal operations, ensuring efficiency and safety.
- Ensure strict adherence to all local and national environmental legislation, including Waste Management Licensing regulations and company policies.
- Implement and monitor waste reduction, reuse, and recycling programs to maximize resource recovery and minimize environmental impact.
- Conduct regular site inspections and audits to identify potential hazards, ensure operational compliance, and promote a safe working environment.
- Prepare comprehensive reports on waste volumes, operational performance, and compliance metrics for internal and external stakeholders.
- Provide training and guidance to operational staff on best practices for waste handling, segregation, and safety procedures.
- Liaise effectively with external stakeholders, including regulatory bodies (e.g., Environment Agency), suppliers, contractors, and local community groups.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of environmental management systems (e.g., ISO 14001).
Required Skills
- Proven experience of at least 3 years in waste management or environmental services.
- Strong knowledge of UK environmental legislation and waste management regulations.
- Excellent leadership and team supervision abilities with a focus on motivation and development.
- Proficiency in data analysis and report generation using standard office software.
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills and ability to make informed decisions under pressure.
- Valid UK driving license and ability to travel to various sites within the region as required.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant degree or diploma in Environmental Science, Waste Management, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related field.
- WAMITAB Certificate of Technical Competence (CoTC) in relevant waste management operations.
- Experience with integrated management systems, particularly ISO 14001.
- Certification in occupational health and safety (e.g., IOSH, NEBOSH).
