Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Staff Oceanographer to join our dynamic team in Ann Arbor, Michigan. In this hybrid role, you will apply your expertise in oceanography, limnology, and related environmental sciences to a variety of challenging projects focused on water resources, coastal engineering, and environmental management. This position involves both office-based analytical work and potential fieldwork, contributing to significant studies across freshwater and marine environments. You will be instrumental in collecting, analyzing, and interpreting complex oceanographic data, developing models, and providing expert advice to clients. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct oceanographic and limnological data collection, analysis, and interpretation for environmental impact assessments, water quality studies, and engineering projects.
- Develop and apply hydrodynamic, water quality, sediment transport, and ecological models for various aquatic systems.
- Prepare technical reports, presentations, and proposals summarizing findings and recommendations for clients and regulatory agencies.
- Participate in field investigations, including deployment and retrieval of oceanographic instrumentation, water quality sampling, and bathymetric surveys.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams of engineers, scientists, and planners on integrated water resource management projects.
- Ensure project deliverables adhere to quality standards, project schedules, and budget constraints.
- Stay current with scientific advancements, regulatory changes, and emerging technologies in oceanography and related fields.
Required Skills
- Master's degree in Oceanography, Limnology, Physical Oceanography, Marine Science, or a related field
- 5+ years of professional experience in oceanographic or limnological consulting or research
- Proficiency in oceanographic data acquisition, processing, and analysis techniques
- Demonstrated experience with numerical modeling software (e.g., DELFT3D, EFDC, HEC-RAS, MIKE 21/3)
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
Preferred Qualifications
- PhD in a relevant scientific discipline
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or Scientist certification
- Experience with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) for spatial data analysis and visualization
- Familiarity with programming languages such as Python or R for data analysis and automation
- Experience with coastal processes, sediment dynamics, or estuarine environments
- Experience managing project tasks, budgets, and schedules
