Job Description
Hamilton County Schools is seeking passionate and dedicated Special Education Teachers to join our vibrant team in Chattanooga, Tennessee. As a Special Education Teacher, you will be instrumental in creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment, developing individualized education programs (IEPs), and implementing evidence-based instructional strategies to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities. You will collaborate closely with general education teachers, parents, and support staff to ensure comprehensive educational and developmental support. Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students with disabilities, adhering to federal and state guidelines.
- Provide direct instructional support to students in various settings, including resource rooms, inclusion classrooms, and small groups.
- Assess student progress regularly, maintain accurate records, and communicate effectively with parents/guardians regarding student performance and development.
- Collaborate with general education teachers to modify curriculum, adapt teaching methods, and implement accommodations and modifications to support student learning.
- Administer and interpret diagnostic assessments to identify student strengths and areas for growth.
- Participate in IEP meetings, multidisciplinary team meetings, and professional development sessions.
- Manage classroom behavior effectively and create a positive, structured learning environment.
- Supervise and direct the activities of paraprofessionals and teaching assistants as needed.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Special Education or a related field (Master's preferred).
- Valid teaching license/certification in Special Education (or eligibility for Tennessee licensure).
- Demonstrated knowledge of federal and state special education laws and regulations (IDEA, Section 504).
- Proficiency in developing, implementing, and monitoring IEPs.
- Strong understanding of various instructional strategies and assistive technologies for students with diverse learning needs.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Commitment to student-centered learning and a belief in the potential of all students.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Special Education.
- Previous experience teaching special education students in a K-12 setting.
- Experience with specific disability categories (e.g., Autism Spectrum Disorder, Learning Disabilities, Emotional Disturbance).
- Familiarity with Tennessee academic standards and curriculum.
- Bilingual proficiency is a plus.
