Job Description
The Halifax Regional Centre for Education is seeking a dedicated and thorough School Custodian / Cleaner to maintain the cleanliness, safety, and operational efficiency of our school facilities. This vital role ensures a healthy and welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors. The successful candidate will be responsible for a wide range of cleaning and minor maintenance tasks, working effectively as part of our facilities team.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform daily cleaning tasks, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming floors, and cleaning windows, walls, and furniture.
- Clean and sanitize restrooms, ensuring adequate supplies are maintained.
- Empty wastebaskets and dispose of trash and recycling properly.
- Operate and maintain cleaning equipment such as floor buffers, vacuums, and carpet cleaners.
- Conduct minor repairs and maintenance tasks, such as changing light bulbs, tightening fixtures, and reporting larger maintenance needs.
- Monitor inventory of cleaning supplies and notify management when supplies need replenishment.
- Ensure school premises are secure at the end of the shift, including locking doors and windows.
- Adhere to all health, safety, and environmental policies and procedures.
- Support setup and breakdown for school events as required.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in custodial or cleaning services, preferably in a school or institutional setting.
- Knowledge of cleaning chemicals, supplies, and equipment.
- Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting, bending, standing for long periods, and operating machinery.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high standards of cleanliness.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Effective communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver's license.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- Experience with basic HVAC or plumbing systems.
