Job Description
We are seeking a diligent and reliable Cleaner / Custodian to join our facilities team. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, sanitation, and general upkeep of our school buildings, ensuring a safe and healthy environment for students, teachers, and administrative staff. This role is crucial to the smooth operation of our schools and requires a keen eye for detail and a strong work ethic.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform daily cleaning duties including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and polishing surfaces in classrooms, offices, hallways, and common areas.
- Clean and sanitize restrooms and replenish supplies regularly.
- Empty wastebaskets and recycling bins.
- Clean windows, glass surfaces, and mirrors.
- Respond to immediate cleaning needs and emergencies (e.g., spills, messes).
- Assist with minor maintenance tasks as required, such as changing light bulbs or reporting repair needs.
- Operate and maintain cleaning equipment such as floor buffers and carpet cleaners.
- Monitor inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment, notifying supervisors when new supplies are needed.
- Adhere to all health and safety regulations and school board policies.
- Prepare facilities for school events and activities, including setting up and taking down furniture.
- Ensure school premises are secure at the end of the shift.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as a cleaner or custodian, preferably in a school or institutional setting.
- Ability to operate various cleaning equipment safely and efficiently.
- Knowledge of cleaning chemicals and supplies, and their proper use.
- Understanding of health and safety regulations.
- Strong attention to detail and thoroughness.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Good physical condition and stamina to perform demanding tasks.
- Reliable and punctual.
Preferred Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- First Aid certification.
- Knowledge of WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System).
- Experience working with children and youth in an educational setting.
