Job Description
IBM Research is seeking a highly motivated and talented Research Physicist to join our advanced materials and quantum sciences team in Buffalo, NY. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct theoretical and experimental research in condensed matter physics, quantum materials, or a related field.
- Design, build, and optimize experimental setups and measurement techniques.
- Perform advanced data acquisition, analysis, and interpretation using scientific software and programming languages.
- Develop and refine theoretical models to explain experimental observations and predict new phenomena.
- Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams of physicists, engineers, and materials scientists.
- Prepare and present research findings at internal meetings, conferences, and through peer-reviewed publications.
- Mentor junior researchers and contribute to the intellectual growth of the research group.
- Contribute to securing patents and intellectual property related to novel discoveries.
Required Skills
- Ph.D. in Physics, Applied Physics, or a closely related discipline.
- Demonstrated expertise in at least one of the following areas: condensed matter physics, quantum mechanics, experimental materials physics, nanoscience, or superconductivity.
- Strong background in experimental design, execution, and data analysis.
- Proficiency in scientific programming languages (e.g., Python, MATLAB, C++) and data visualization tools.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a proven track record of scientific publications.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Demonstrated problem-solving capabilities and analytical rigor.
Preferred Qualifications
- Postdoctoral research experience in an academic or industrial setting.
- Experience with advanced materials characterization techniques (e.g., cryogenics, UHV systems, electron microscopy, spectroscopy).
- Familiarity with quantum computing platforms or quantum information theory.
- Experience in cleanroom environments and nanofabrication techniques.
- Prior experience mentoring students or junior researchers.
- Track record of successful grant applications or project leadership.
