Job Description
Norfolk Southern is seeking a dedicated and experienced Railroad Safety Inspector to join our team in Durham, NC. In this critical role, you will be responsible for ensuring compliance with federal, state, and company safety regulations, identifying potential hazards, and promoting a culture of safety across our rail operations. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in railroad operations or safety, with a keen eye for detail and a proactive approach to risk management. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct regular inspections of railroad tracks, equipment, facilities, and operational procedures to ensure compliance with FRA regulations and company safety standards.
- Investigate incidents, accidents, and near misses, determining root causes and recommending corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Develop and deliver safety training programs for employees on various topics, including track safety, hazardous materials handling, and operational protocols.
- Monitor employee adherence to safety rules and procedures, providing guidance and intervention as needed.
- Maintain accurate records of inspections, incidents, training, and compliance activities.
- Collaborate with operational teams, management, and external regulatory bodies to implement and improve safety initiatives.
- Prepare comprehensive reports on safety performance, audit findings, and incident investigations.
- Participate in safety committees and contribute to the continuous improvement of the company's safety management system.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in railroad operations, safety, or a related field (minimum 3 years)
- Thorough understanding of Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations and other relevant safety standards
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for incident investigation and root cause analysis
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively train employees and collaborate with stakeholders
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment
- Proficiency in using inspection tools and safety monitoring equipment
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel as needed within the assigned territory
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Safety Management, Engineering, or a related technical field
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or equivalent safety certification
- Experience with hazardous materials transportation regulations (e.g., DOT, hazmat endorsement)
- Familiarity with railway signaling systems and track maintenance practices
- Previous experience in developing and delivering safety training curricula
