Job Description

Union Pacific Railroad is seeking a dedicated and experienced Railroad Safety Inspector to join our team in Des Moines, Iowa. In this critical role, you will be responsible for ensuring the highest standards of safety compliance across our railroad operations. You will conduct regular inspections of tracks, equipment, facilities, and operational procedures to identify potential hazards and ensure adherence to federal, state, and company safety regulations. The ideal candidate possesses a strong understanding of railroad operations, an unwavering commitment to safety, and the ability to work independently in various environments. This position plays a vital role in protecting our employees, the public, and the environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine and specialized inspections of railroad tracks, bridges, signals, rolling stock, and other infrastructure.
  • Monitor operational procedures and work practices to ensure compliance with all safety regulations, including FRA guidelines and company policies.
  • Identify and document safety hazards, unsafe conditions, and non-compliant practices.
  • Recommend corrective actions and follow up to ensure timely resolution of identified issues.
  • Investigate incidents, accidents, and near misses to determine root causes and implement preventive measures.
  • Prepare detailed inspection reports, incident reports, and other documentation.
  • Provide safety training and guidance to employees as needed.
  • Collaborate with operations, maintenance, and engineering teams to promote a culture of safety.
  • Stay current with changes in railroad safety regulations and industry best practices.

Required Skills

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in railroad operations or safety.
  • Thorough knowledge of Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations and other applicable safety standards.
  • Ability to interpret technical documents, blueprints, and operational procedures.
  • Strong observational and analytical skills to identify safety risks.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for reporting and training.
  • Proficiency in using inspection tools and safety monitoring equipment.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound decisions under pressure.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to various worksites within the region.
  • Physical ability to perform duties in various weather conditions and terrains, including walking long distances, climbing, and lifting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Safety Management, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or other relevant safety certifications.
  • Experience with safety management systems (SMS).
  • Previous experience in accident investigation and root cause analysis.
