Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Railroad Safety Inspector to join our team in Idaho Falls, Idaho. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring compliance with federal, state, and company safety regulations, identifying potential hazards, and implementing corrective actions to maintain the highest standards of safety across our rail operations. This role involves rigorous inspections, detailed documentation, and collaboration with various departments to promote a proactive safety culture.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular inspections of railroad tracks, equipment, facilities, and operational procedures to ensure compliance with all safety standards and regulations (FRA, OSHA, company policies).
  • Identify and report safety hazards, deficiencies, and non-compliance issues, recommending and tracking corrective actions.
  • Investigate accidents, incidents, and near-misses, determining root causes and developing preventative measures.
  • Prepare comprehensive inspection reports, incident summaries, and other documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Provide safety training and guidance to employees on best practices, safe operating procedures, and emergency response.
  • Collaborate with operational teams, engineers, and management to implement safety improvements and foster a strong safety culture.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of railroad safety regulations, industry best practices, and technological advancements.
  • Respond to safety concerns and inquiries from employees and external stakeholders.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in railroad operations, safety management, or a related industrial safety field.
  • Thorough understanding of Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations and other relevant safety standards.
  • Proven ability to conduct detailed inspections, identify hazards, and implement corrective actions.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for reporting, training, and interdepartmental collaboration.
  • Proficiency in using safety management software and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in various weather conditions and environments.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel locally as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or equivalent safety certification.
  • Experience with root cause analysis methodologies (e.g., TapRooT, 5 Whys).
  • Prior experience working directly with Union Pacific's safety protocols and systems.
