Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Public Prosecutor to join our dedicated team in Calgary. The successful candidate will be responsible for prosecuting criminal offenses on behalf of the Crown, ensuring the fair and just administration of justice. This role involves managing a diverse caseload, preparing and presenting cases in court, engaging in legal research, and providing legal advice. The ideal candidate will possess a strong commitment to public service, exceptional advocacy skills, and a comprehensive understanding of Canadian criminal law.
Key Responsibilities
- Conducting criminal prosecutions in various levels of court, including trials, preliminary inquiries, and appeals.
- Providing legal advice and opinions to law enforcement agencies and other government bodies.
- Preparing legal documents, including indictments, briefs, and legal arguments.
- Engaging in plea negotiations and alternative dispute resolution processes.
- Conducting legal research and staying current with developments in criminal law.
- Mentoring junior legal staff and contributing to professional development initiatives.
- Collaborating with victims, witnesses, and other stakeholders throughout the judicial process.
- Maintaining accurate and thorough case files and records.
- Representing the Crown in judicial review applications and other complex legal matters.
Required Skills
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) or Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree from a recognized university.
- Membership in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience practicing criminal law, preferably in a prosecutorial role.
- Demonstrated courtroom advocacy and litigation skills.
- Thorough knowledge of the Criminal Code of Canada, Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and relevant provincial statutes.
- Excellent legal research, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
- Superior written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to manage a demanding caseload and work effectively under pressure.
- Strong ethical judgment and commitment to justice and fairness.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience prosecuting complex or specialized criminal cases (e.g., organized crime, major frauds).
- Fluency in French is considered an asset.
- Experience with digital evidence and forensic analysis.
- Post-graduate studies in criminal law or related fields.
