Job Description

The Kresge Foundation is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Public Policy Coordinator to join our dynamic team in Detroit. This role is crucial in supporting the Foundation’s engagement with local, state, and national policy initiatives that align with our strategic priorities. The Public Policy Coordinator will play a key role in tracking legislation, preparing policy briefs, coordinating advocacy efforts, and facilitating communication between the Foundation and various external stakeholders, including government officials, community leaders, and partner organizations. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to meaningful change and advance the Foundation’s mission through effective policy engagement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor legislative and regulatory developments at local, state, and federal levels relevant to the Foundation's focus areas (e.g., urban development, education, health equity).
  • Conduct research and analysis on specific policy issues, preparing concise summaries, briefing materials, and presentations for internal and external audiences.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of the Foundation's public policy strategies and advocacy campaigns.
  • Coordinate meetings, events, and communications with elected officials, government agencies, non-profit partners, and other stakeholders.
  • Support the preparation of policy statements, testimony, comments on proposed regulations, and other advocacy materials.
  • Maintain a comprehensive database of policy contacts, legislative trackers, and research resources.
  • Collaborate closely with program staff to ensure policy work is aligned with programmatic goals and grantmaking strategies.
  • Represent the Foundation at relevant external meetings, coalitions, and public forums as needed.
  • Provide logistical and administrative support for public policy initiatives, including scheduling, material preparation, and follow-up.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Political Science, Public Policy, Urban Planning, Economics, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in public policy, government affairs, advocacy, or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of legislative and regulatory processes at multiple government levels.
  • Excellent research, analytical, and writing skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information into clear and concise reports.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, capable of building rapport with diverse stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and experience with policy tracking software/databases.
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice and equity, and alignment with the Foundation’s mission and values.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Public Policy, Public Administration, or a related field.
  • Experience working with philanthropic organizations or non-profits focused on urban issues.
  • Familiarity with the policy landscape and key stakeholders in Michigan and Detroit.
  • Experience with grassroots advocacy or community organizing.
