We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Public Affairs Officer to join our team in Spokane.

Job Description

The Public Affairs Officer will play a crucial role in managing and enhancing Avista’s public image and relationships with key stakeholders, including government officials, community leaders, customers, and media. This position involves developing and executing strategic communication plans, monitoring public sentiment, and ensuring transparent and effective communication on behalf of the company. The ideal candidate will be a skilled communicator with a strong understanding of public policy, media relations, and community engagement within the energy sector.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement comprehensive public affairs strategies to support company objectives and enhance reputation.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with local, state, and federal government officials, community organizations, and key influencers.
  • Serve as a company spokesperson for media inquiries, public events, and community forums as needed.
  • Monitor public opinion, track legislative and regulatory developments, and provide strategic advice to leadership.
  • Prepare and disseminate press releases, statements, fact sheets, and other communication materials.
  • Organize and manage public events, community outreach programs, and stakeholder meetings.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, including legal, regulatory, and marketing, to ensure consistent messaging.
  • Respond to public concerns and inquiries in a timely and professional manner.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Political Science, Journalism, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in public affairs, corporate communications, government relations, or a similar role.
  • Proven ability to develop and execute strategic communication plans.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a strong ability to articulate complex issues clearly.
  • Experience in media relations, including writing press releases and handling media inquiries.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong understanding of public policy, legislative processes, and community engagement.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience working in the energy, utilities, or a regulated industry.
  • Familiarity with the political and community landscape of Spokane and the broader Pacific Northwest region.
  • Crisis communication experience.
  • Fluency in additional languages relevant to the community.
