Job Description
The Probation Officer plays a critical role in the criminal justice system, responsible for supervising individuals placed on probation by the courts. This position involves monitoring compliance with court orders, conducting assessments, developing individualized supervision plans, and connecting clients with appropriate community resources for rehabilitation and support. A successful Probation Officer maintains accurate records, performs regular check-ins, conducts home and field visits, and collaborates effectively with law enforcement, social services, and legal professionals to promote public safety and facilitate successful reintegration into the community.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise a caseload of adult or juvenile probationers, ensuring compliance with court orders and probation conditions.
- Conduct comprehensive risk and needs assessments to develop individualized supervision plans.
- Monitor probationer activities through regular meetings, field visits (home, work, community), and collateral contacts.
- Provide referrals to rehabilitative services such as substance abuse treatment, mental health counseling, educational programs, and employment assistance.
- Prepare detailed and accurate reports for the courts, including violation reports, progress reports, and sentencing recommendations.
- Testify in court hearings as required regarding probationer compliance and status.
- Maintain meticulous and up-to-date case records and documentation in accordance with departmental standards.
- Collaborate effectively with law enforcement agencies, judicial staff, attorneys, and various community-based organizations.
- Implement evidence-based practices in probation supervision to promote behavior change and reduce recidivism.
Required Skills
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for effective interaction and report writing.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment, discretion, and ethical decision-making in complex situations.
- Proficiency in using case management software, Microsoft Office Suite, and other relevant computer applications.
- Comprehensive knowledge of criminal justice principles, legal procedures, and state/local laws pertaining to probation.
- Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to manage a diverse and demanding caseload independently.
- Demonstrated empathy, patience, and cultural competency when working with diverse populations.
- Proven conflict resolution and de-escalation techniques.
- Ability to conduct thorough investigations and gather accurate information.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Criminal Justice, Social Work, Counseling, Public Administration, or a closely related field.
- Bilingual proficiency (Spanish/English) to better serve the community.
- Experience with evidence-based correctional practices, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) programs.
- Certification as a Texas Probation Officer or the ability to obtain certification within a specified timeframe following employment.
