Job Description

The Virginia Department of Corrections is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Probation Officer to join our team in Richmond, VA. This vital role involves supervising individuals placed on probation by the courts, ensuring compliance with court orders, and facilitating their successful reintegration into the community. The Probation Officer acts as a direct link between the justice system and probationers, providing guidance, support, and accountability. This position requires strong communication skills, a commitment to public safety, and the ability to work effectively with diverse populations. You will manage a caseload, conduct investigations, prepare reports for the court, and connect probationers with necessary resources and services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a caseload of probationers, monitoring their activities and ensuring adherence to court-ordered conditions.
  • Conduct regular interviews and home visits with probationers to assess progress, identify needs, and address challenges.
  • Prepare comprehensive presentence investigation reports and violation reports for the courts.
  • Collaborate with law enforcement agencies, community organizations, and social service providers to support probationer rehabilitation.
  • Facilitate access to resources such as employment assistance, substance abuse treatment, mental health services, and educational programs.
  • Conduct risk and needs assessments to develop individualized supervision plans.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of all probationer interactions and case activities.
  • Enforce probation conditions, including conducting drug screenings and making recommendations for court action in cases of non-compliance.
  • Participate in court hearings, providing testimony and recommendations as needed.
  • Complete ongoing training and professional development to stay current with best practices in corrections and criminal justice.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in corrections, law enforcement, social work, or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of criminal justice principles, court procedures, and probation regulations.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to build rapport with diverse populations while maintaining professional boundaries.
  • Proficiency in conducting interviews, assessments, and investigations.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage a demanding caseload effectively.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Valid Virginia Driver's License and access to reliable transportation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a related field.
  • Experience working with individuals with substance abuse, mental health, or criminogenic needs.
  • Knowledge of local community resources and social services in the Richmond, VA area.
  • Certification as a Probation/Parole Officer in Virginia (or ability to obtain within a specified timeframe).
  • Bilingual proficiency (especially Spanish).
