Job Description

We are looking for an experienced and passionate Private Gardener / Horticulturist to take full charge of the landscape maintenance, health, and aesthetic development of a prominent private estate in Sahuarita, Arizona. This is a hands-on role requiring a deep understanding of horticulture, landscape design principles, and sustainable gardening practices, with a particular emphasis on the unique climate and flora of Southern Arizona. The ideal candidate will be a meticulous, self-motivated individual committed to maintaining the highest standards of garden excellence and enhancing the beauty of the property year-round.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive garden maintenance, including planting, weeding, mulching, fertilizing, and soil amendment.
  • Execute precise pruning, trimming, and shaping of trees, shrubs, and hedges to maintain desired forms and promote plant health.
  • Diagnose and treat plant diseases, pest infestations, and other health issues using integrated pest management (IPM) techniques.
  • Manage and maintain irrigation systems, including routine checks, adjustments, and repairs, to ensure optimal water usage and plant hydration.
  • Plan and implement seasonal planting schedules, including annuals, perennials, and native plants suitable for the Arizona climate.
  • Monitor and manage the overall health and vigor of all landscape elements, including lawns, water features, and hardscapes.
  • Provide input and execute enhancements to garden design, plant selection, and landscape features in consultation with the property owner and BrightView management.
  • Maintain detailed records of garden activities, plant inventory, treatment applications, and equipment maintenance.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of garden tools and equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Ensure all gardening work adheres to environmental best practices and sustainability guidelines.

Required Skills

  • A minimum of 5 years of professional gardening or horticultural experience, preferably within high-end residential or estate settings.
  • Demonstrated expertise in horticulture, including plant physiology, soil science, entomology, and pathology.
  • Proficiency in plant identification, particularly with drought-tolerant and native Arizona species.
  • Strong knowledge of irrigation systems, including drip and sprinkler system operation, maintenance, and basic troubleshooting.
  • Advanced pruning techniques for various plant types, including fruit trees, ornamentals, and roses.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining immaculate garden standards.
  • Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and prioritize tasks.
  • Excellent communication skills to interact professionally with the property owner and BrightView management.
  • Physical stamina and ability to perform demanding outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Horticulture, Landscape Architecture, Agronomy, or a related field.
  • Professional certifications (e.g., Certified Horticulturist, ISA Certified Arborist, or similar).
  • Experience with sustainable landscaping practices, xeriscaping, and water conservation techniques.
  • Knowledge of organic gardening methods and integrated pest management (IPM).
  • Familiarity with landscape design software or ability to interpret landscape plans.
  • Arizona Department of Agriculture pesticide applicator license or ability to obtain one.
