Job Description
Join Mortenson’s skilled trades team as a Plasterer Apprentice and embark on a rewarding career path. This apprenticeship offers an invaluable opportunity to learn the intricacies of plastering from experienced journeymen, working on a variety of commercial and institutional projects. You will gain hands-on experience in preparing surfaces, mixing materials, applying plaster, and finishing surfaces to high-quality standards. This role requires dedication, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to learn and master a skilled trade.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist journeymen plasterers with surface preparation, including cleaning, scraping, and applying base coats.
- Learn to mix plaster, stucco, and other related materials to correct consistencies.
- Apply plaster coats to walls, ceilings, and other surfaces using various tools such as trowels, brushes, and spray equipment.
- Cut, trim, and install plasterboard to create desired shapes and finishes.
- Perform finishing work, including sanding, smoothing, and texturing surfaces.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment, adhering to all company safety protocols and OSHA regulations.
- Read and interpret blueprints and specifications to understand project requirements.
- Care for and maintain tools and equipment.
- Actively participate in on-the-job training and related classroom instruction as part of the apprenticeship program.
Required Skills
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting heavy materials, standing for extended periods, and working at heights.
- Basic math skills for measurements and material calculations.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent hand-eye coordination and attention to detail.
- Reliable transportation to various job sites within the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area.
- Commitment to safety and adherence to all workplace rules.
- Willingness to learn and take direction from experienced professionals.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in construction or related trades (e.g., general labor, painting, drywall).
