Job Description
We are seeking a highly analytical and detail-oriented Patent Examiner to join our dynamic Intellectual Property team in Swansea. In this crucial role, you will be responsible for meticulously reviewing patent applications, assessing their novelty and inventiveness, and ensuring compliance with relevant patent laws and regulations. This position requires a strong technical background, exceptional research skills, and the ability to articulate complex technical and legal concepts clearly. You will collaborate closely with patent attorneys and technical specialists, contributing directly to the protection of innovative ideas for our diverse client base.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct thorough examinations of patent applications, including prior art searches in various databases.
- Analyze technical disclosures to determine novelty, inventive step, and industrial applicability.
- Draft detailed examination reports, citing relevant prior art and explaining objections based on patent law.
- Communicate effectively with applicants, agents, and internal teams regarding application status and examination findings.
- Participate in appeal hearings and contribute to post-grant proceedings as required.
- Stay abreast of developments in technology and patent law to maintain expertise.
- Collaborate with patent attorneys to strategize on complex cases and provide technical insights.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Biotechnology, or a related technical field.
- Minimum 2 years of experience in patent examination, patent prosecution, or a closely related IP role.
- Proficiency in conducting comprehensive prior art searches using various patent and scientific databases.
- Excellent analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for drafting reports and communicating with stakeholders.
- Meticulous attention to detail and a high level of accuracy.
- Ability to interpret complex technical information and legal texts.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree (Ph.D.) in a relevant technical discipline.
- Experience with European or UK patent law.
- Legal qualification (e.g., JD, LLM in IP) or progress towards becoming a qualified Patent Attorney.
- Familiarity with IP management software.
