Job Description

We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Pastoral Worker to join our multidisciplinary team at the McGill University Health Centre. This role is essential in providing spiritual and emotional support to patients, their families, and staff from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds. The Pastoral Worker will offer a non-denominational presence, listen empathetically, and provide comfort and guidance during times of illness, distress, or grief. This position requires an individual who is deeply committed to person-centred care and capable of working collaboratively within a demanding healthcare environment. Key Responsibilities

  • Provide spiritual and emotional support to patients, families, and staff within the hospital setting.
  • Conduct spiritual assessments and develop care plans in collaboration with the healthcare team.
  • Offer compassionate presence, active listening, and counseling to individuals facing illness, loss, or ethical dilemmas.
  • Facilitate rituals, prayers, and spiritual practices according to individual needs and beliefs.
  • Serve as a resource for ethical discussions and end-of-life care planning.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings and contribute to integrated patient care.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential documentation of spiritual care interventions.
  • Educate staff and volunteers on spiritual care best practices and cultural sensitivity.
  • Respond to urgent spiritual care needs and provide crisis intervention when necessary.

Required Skills

  • Master of Divinity (M.Div.) or equivalent theological degree from an accredited institution.
  • Completion of at least four units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE).
  • Certification or eligibility for certification by a recognized professional chaplaincy body (e.g., CASC/ACSS, NACC, APC).
  • Demonstrated experience in providing spiritual care in a healthcare setting.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and empathetic listening skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within a diverse, multicultural, and multi-faith environment.
  • Proficiency in English and French (both oral and written) is highly preferred due to the bilingual nature of Montreal.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a large academic hospital or healthcare network.
  • Familiarity with various religious traditions and spiritual practices.
  • Experience with grief counseling and end-of-life support.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • A track record of collaborative teamwork and interdisciplinary engagement.
