Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Park Ranger to join our team, ensuring the safety, enjoyment, and conservation of Arlington’s beautiful parks and natural areas. The Park Ranger will serve as a visible and active presence, engaging with the public, enforcing park rules and regulations, maintaining park facilities, and contributing to environmental education initiatives. This role requires a strong commitment to public service, an understanding of natural resource management, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team in various outdoor environments.

Key Responsibilities

• Patrol park grounds, facilities, and natural areas to ensure public safety and compliance with park rules and regulations.
• Provide information and assistance to park visitors, answering questions and offering guidance on park features and activities.
• Respond to incidents, emergencies, and complaints, including first aid, search and rescue, and conflict resolution.
• Conduct routine maintenance and upkeep of park facilities, trails, and natural resources, including litter removal and minor repairs.
• Monitor and report on the condition of natural habitats, wildlife, and plant life within the parks.
• Assist with the development and delivery of environmental education programs and interpretive services for diverse audiences.
• Collaborate with law enforcement, emergency services, and other county departments as needed.
• Prepare accurate and timely reports on incidents, activities, and park conditions.
• Operate and maintain park vehicles, equipment, and tools safely and effectively.

Required Skills

• Ability to interpret and enforce park rules, regulations, and relevant laws.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills for effective public interaction.
• Ability to work independently in an outdoor environment, often in varying weather conditions.
• Basic knowledge of natural resource management and ecological principles.
• Physical ability to walk, stand, lift, and perform strenuous outdoor tasks.
• Valid Virginia Driver's License.
• CPR and First Aid certification (or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire).

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Parks and Recreation Management, Environmental Science, Forestry, Natural Resources, or a related field.
• One to two years of experience in park operations, recreation management, or natural resource protection.
• Certification as a Virginia Law Enforcement Officer or equivalent experience.
• Experience with environmental education or interpretive programs.
• Knowledge of local flora and fauna of the Mid-Atlantic region.
