Job Description
Fugro is seeking a talented and passionate Oceanographer to join our dynamic team in Edinburgh, UK. This is a unique opportunity for a skilled professional to contribute to critical marine projects across various sectors, including renewable energy, oil and gas, and environmental monitoring. As an Oceanographer, you will play a key role in designing, executing, and interpreting oceanographic surveys, ensuring the delivery of high-quality data and actionable insights to our clients. You will work with cutting-edge technology and a team of experts dedicated to understanding and protecting our marine environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and plan oceanographic surveys, including defining sampling strategies, instrument deployment, and data acquisition protocols.
- Lead and participate in offshore field campaigns, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of oceanographic equipment.
- Process, analyze, and interpret various oceanographic data sets (e.g., currents, waves, tides, water quality, bathymetry).
- Prepare detailed technical reports, presentations, and scientific publications summarizing findings and recommendations.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including marine biologists, geophysicists, and engineers, to integrate oceanographic data into broader project scopes.
- Maintain and calibrate oceanographic instrumentation, ensuring optimal performance and data quality.
- Stay abreast of the latest advancements in oceanographic techniques, software, and instrumentation.
- Contribute to bid proposals and project management activities.
Required Skills
- Master's or Ph.D. degree in Oceanography, Marine Science, Physical Oceanography, or a closely related field.
- Proven experience (minimum 4 years) in marine environmental surveying and data analysis.
- Demonstrable expertise in oceanographic data processing software (e.g., MATLAB, Python, R, SURFER, ArcGIS).
- Strong understanding of physical oceanographic processes, coastal dynamics, and marine meteorology.
- Experience with the deployment and recovery of oceanographic instruments (e.g., ADCPs, CTDs, wave buoys).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce high-quality technical reports.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Eligibility for visa sponsorship (Fugro will support the process).
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience working in a commercial marine consultancy or offshore industry setting.
- Experience with numerical modeling of oceanographic processes.
- Proficiency in geographic information systems (GIS) for spatial data analysis.
- Offshore survival certificates (e.g., BOSIET, MIST) or willingness to obtain them.
- Project management experience.
