Job Description

The San Antonio Museum of Art is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Museum Curator to join our dedicated team. This pivotal role involves overseeing a specific collection area, contributing to the museum’s scholarly endeavors, and developing compelling exhibitions that resonate with our local and global audiences. The ideal candidate will be a passionate art historian or museum professional with a deep knowledge of their field, excellent research and communication skills, and a commitment to making art accessible. Key Responsibilities

  • Manage, research, and develop a designated collection area, including cataloging, conservation oversight, and strategic acquisitions.
  • Develop and implement innovative exhibitions from concept to installation, including interpretive texts, publications, and related programming.
  • Conduct original scholarly research and publish findings in exhibition catalogs, academic journals, and other museum publications.
  • Actively participate in educational programs, lectures, tours, and outreach activities to engage diverse audiences.
  • Work collaboratively with other museum departments, including education, development, conservation, and registration, to advance institutional goals.
  • Identify and cultivate relationships with donors, collectors, and art patrons to support the growth and maintenance of the collection and special projects.
  • Monitor market trends and scholarship in relevant fields to ensure the museum's collection and programs remain current and impactful.
  • Assist with grant applications and fundraising initiatives specific to your collection area or planned exhibitions.

Required Skills

  • Ph.D. in Art History, Museum Studies, or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible curatorial experience in an art museum setting.
  • Demonstrated expertise in a specific area of art history relevant to SAMA's collections.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including a strong record of publications and public presentations.
  • Proven ability to conceive, organize, and install major exhibitions.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Proficiency in at least one foreign language relevant to the collection area.
  • Eligibility and willingness to undergo the visa sponsorship process.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Record of securing grants or significant contributions for museum projects.
  • Experience working with diverse communities and developing inclusive programming.
  • Familiarity with collection management databases (e.g., The Museum System – TMS).
  • Experience mentoring junior staff or interns.
  • Participation in national or international professional organizations.
