Job Description
Virginia Hospital Center is seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Mental Health Nurse to join our growing team. In this vital role, you will be instrumental in providing exceptional psychiatric care, assessment, and treatment to patients experiencing a wide range of mental health disorders. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct thorough psychiatric assessments, including mental status exams and risk assessments.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized care plans in collaboration with patients, families, and the healthcare team.
- Administer psychiatric medications and monitor patients for therapeutic effects and potential side effects.
- Provide therapeutic interventions, including individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, and de-escalation techniques.
- Educate patients and their families about mental health conditions, treatment options, medication management, and coping strategies.
- Maintain accurate, detailed, and timely electronic health records (EHR) of patient assessments, interventions, and outcomes.
- Collaborate effectively with psychiatrists, social workers, therapists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure integrated patient care.
- Respond to psychiatric emergencies and manage acute behavioral changes safely and effectively.
- Participate in unit meetings, case conferences, and professional development activities.
Required Skills
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in Virginia or eligibility for licensure.
- Minimum of 2 years of recent experience in psychiatric or mental health nursing.
- Demonstrated strong clinical assessment, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and challenging healthcare environment.
- Profound compassion, empathy, and respect for patients with mental health conditions.
- Proficiency in using electronic health record (EHR) systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.
- Certification in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing (PMH-BC).

- Familiarity with trauma-informed care principles and recovery-oriented practices.
