Job Description
Massachusetts General Hospital is seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Medical Examiner to join our dedicated team. This critical role involves conducting forensic autopsies, determining cause and manner of death, providing expert testimony, and collaborating with law enforcement and public health officials. The ideal candidate will possess a strong foundation in forensic pathology, exceptional analytical skills, and a commitment to accuracy and public service. You will contribute to our mission of advancing health and understanding through meticulous scientific investigation.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive postmortem examinations (autopsies) to determine cause and manner of death.
- Collect and preserve evidence from bodies and crime scenes in accordance with forensic best practices.
- Interpret laboratory results, medical histories, and investigative findings.
- Document all findings meticulously in official reports.
- Provide expert testimony in court proceedings.
- Collaborate with law enforcement, district attorneys, funeral homes, and other agencies.
- Educate and advise medical students, residents, and other professionals.
- Maintain accurate records and adhere to all legal and ethical guidelines.
Required Skills
- MD or DO degree from an accredited institution.
- Board Certification in Anatomic Pathology and Forensic Pathology.
- Valid medical license in Massachusetts (or eligibility to obtain one).
- Proven experience in conducting forensic autopsies and death investigations.
- Strong knowledge of forensic science principles and techniques.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Additional certifications or fellowships in related subspecialties.
- Experience working in an academic medical center or large public health system.
- Familiarity with mass casualty incident response protocols.
