Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Legislative Drafter to join our Public Policy and Government Affairs team in our Denver office. The successful candidate will play a critical role in assisting clients with the development, analysis, and drafting of legislative and regulatory proposals. This position requires a strong understanding of legal principles, legislative processes, and an ability to communicate complex legal concepts clearly and concisely. You will work closely with attorneys, lobbyists, and clients to translate policy objectives into effective legal language, ensuring accuracy and compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Draft legislative bills, resolutions, amendments, and other legal documents for clients, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and adherence to legislative standards.
- Conduct comprehensive legal research on existing statutes, regulations, and constitutional provisions relevant to proposed legislation.
- Analyze proposed legislation for potential legal implications, consistency with current law, and practical enforceability.
- Collaborate with attorneys, policy advisors, and clients to refine legislative language and ensure alignment with policy goals.
- Provide technical assistance and guidance on legislative drafting best practices and procedural requirements.
- Prepare summaries, memoranda, and explanatory materials related to drafted legislation.
- Monitor legislative developments and regulatory changes pertinent to client interests.
- Participate in client meetings and internal strategy sessions to discuss legislative projects.
Required Skills
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
- Admission to the Colorado Bar or eligibility for admission.
- Minimum of 4 years of experience in legislative drafting, legal research, or public policy.
- Demonstrated ability to draft clear, concise, and legally sound legislative text.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
- Proficiency in legal research tools and databases (e.g., Westlaw, LexisNexis).
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working directly with state or federal legislative bodies or regulatory agencies.
- Familiarity with Colorado state legislative procedures and political landscape.
- Post-graduate work in public policy, political science, or a related field.
- Experience in specific policy areas relevant to the firm's clients (e.g., energy, environmental, healthcare, financial services).
