Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Learning Support Assistant to join our team at McKinney High School. The successful candidate will work under the direct supervision of certified teachers to provide academic, behavioral, and social support to students with diverse learning needs. This vital role involves assisting with classroom activities, implementing individualized education plans (IEPs), and creating a positive and inclusive learning environment that promotes student success.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide one-on-one or small group instruction and support to students as directed by the classroom teacher.
- Assist with the implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and behavior intervention plans (BIPs).
- Support students with academic tasks, organization, and study skills across various subjects.
- Observe and document student progress, behavior, and participation.
- Assist teachers in preparing instructional materials, managing classroom logistics, and maintaining a clean and organized learning space.
- Facilitate positive social interactions among students and support the development of social-emotional skills.
- Supervise students during non-instructional times, including lunch, recess, and transitions.
- Communicate effectively with teachers, parents, and other school staff regarding student needs and progress.
- Participate in professional development and training sessions as required.
Required Skills
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Minimum of 48 college hours or successful completion of a paraprofessional assessment demonstrating knowledge of reading, writing, and math.
- Experience working with children or adolescents, particularly those with special needs.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
- Patience, empathy, and a genuine desire to support student learning and development.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding student information.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's Degree or higher in Education, Child Development, Psychology, or a related field.
- Prior experience as a paraprofessional, teaching assistant, or similar role in an educational setting.
- Knowledge of various learning disabilities and support strategies.
- Basic computer proficiency and familiarity with educational technology.
