Job Description
We are seeking a diligent and experienced Insurance Underwriter to join our dynamic team in Hamilton, Ontario. The successful candidate will be responsible for evaluating, classifying, and rating risks for various insurance policies, ensuring adherence to underwriting guidelines and profitability targets. Key Responsibilities
- Analyze and evaluate insurance applications to determine eligibility, risk classification, and appropriate premiums.
- Assess complex financial and medical information to make informed underwriting decisions.
- Ensure compliance with company underwriting guidelines, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.
- Communicate effectively with agents, brokers, and internal teams regarding underwriting decisions, requirements, and policy terms.
- Negotiate coverage terms and conditions, within established authority limits, to secure profitable business.
- Identify potential fraudulent activities and escalate suspicious cases as per company protocols.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of underwriting processes and guidelines.
- Stay updated on market trends, product changes, and competitive landscape.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in insurance underwriting, preferably within life or health insurance.
- Strong analytical and decision-making skills with the ability to interpret complex data.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Proficiency in using underwriting software and standard office applications.
- Thorough understanding of insurance principles, products, and regulatory frameworks.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
- Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
- University degree in Business, Finance, Actuarial Science, or a related field.
- Completion of relevant industry designations (e.g., FLMI, ALU, AIRC).
- Experience with international applications or global underwriting standards.
- Bilingual proficiency (English and French).
