Job Description

AECOM is seeking a dedicated and experienced Highway Safety Specialist to join our dynamic team in Baltimore, Maryland. In this critical role, you will be instrumental in analyzing roadway safety performance, identifying potential hazards, and developing effective countermeasures to reduce accidents and improve overall traffic safety. You will work on a variety of projects, collaborating with engineers, planners, and clients to implement best practices in highway design and operations. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of traffic engineering principles, safety analysis techniques, and federal/state safety guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive roadway safety analyses, including crash data analysis, site investigations, and hazard identification.
• Develop and evaluate highway safety improvement projects, including geometric design modifications, signage, pavement markings, and traffic control devices.
• Apply various safety analysis tools and software (e.g., HSM, IHSDM, SafetyAnalyst) to assess project effectiveness.
• Prepare detailed technical reports, presentations, and grant applications related to highway safety initiatives.
• Collaborate with state and local agencies, community groups, and other stakeholders to promote safety awareness and implement safety programs.
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local highway safety standards and regulations.
• Participate in public meetings and workshops to present findings and gather feedback.
• Provide expert advice on highway safety issues to project teams and clients.

Required Skills

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or a closely related field.
• Minimum of 4 years of experience in highway safety engineering or traffic engineering.
• Proficiency in highway safety analysis methods, including crash data analysis and countermeasure selection.
• Familiarity with the Highway Safety Manual (HSM) and other relevant safety guidelines.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree in Civil or Transportation Engineering.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license in Maryland or ability to obtain within 6 months.
• Experience with specific safety analysis software (e.g., IHSDM, SafetyAnalyst, ArcGIS).
• Certifications in Roadway Safety Professional (RSP) or similar.
• Knowledge of federal and state transportation funding programs for safety improvements.
• Experience in conducting Road Safety Audits (RSAs).
