Job Description

AECOM is seeking a dedicated and experienced Highway Safety Specialist to join our dynamic team in Oakland, CA. This role will involve applying expert knowledge of highway safety principles, standards, and regulations to a variety of transportation projects. The specialist will be crucial in identifying potential hazards, developing mitigation strategies, and ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal safety guidelines, contributing significantly to the safety and efficiency of our nation’s roadways.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive highway safety analyses, including crash data analysis, road safety audits, and safety performance evaluations.
• Identify potential safety issues on existing roadways and new designs, proposing effective countermeasures.
• Apply knowledge of Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), AASHTO Green Book, Highway Safety Manual (HSM), and other relevant standards.
• Develop and review traffic control plans, signing and striping plans, and other safety-related design elements.
• Prepare detailed technical reports, safety briefs, and presentations for clients and stakeholders.
• Collaborate with engineers, planners, and project managers to integrate safety considerations into all project phases.
• Participate in fieldwork, site visits, and data collection activities as required.
• Stay current with emerging trends, technologies, and best practices in highway safety.
• Provide expert advice and guidance on highway safety matters to internal teams and external clients.

Required Skills

• Strong understanding of highway safety principles, standards, and regulations (e.g., MUTCD, AASHTO, HSM).
• Proficiency in crash data analysis and safety performance evaluation techniques.
• Experience with traffic engineering software (e.g., HCS, Synchro, VISSIM) and GIS tools.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including technical report writing.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or a related field.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license in California or ability to obtain within 12 months.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree in Civil or Transportation Engineering.
• Certification as a Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE).
• Experience with Caltrans projects and standards.
• Familiarity with human factors in transportation safety.
• Demonstrated project management experience.
• Previous experience conducting Road Safety Audits (RSA) or Road Safety Assessments.
