Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Government Statistician to join our dynamic team. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to vital statistical analysis and reporting that underpins national policy and public understanding. You will be instrumental in the collection, analysis, interpretation, and dissemination of complex datasets, working on projects that have a direct impact on the UK. The successful candidate will possess a strong foundation in statistical methodologies, excellent analytical skills, and a commitment to data quality and integrity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement statistical surveys and data collection methodologies.
  • Clean, process, and analyse large and complex datasets using statistical software.
  • Develop and apply appropriate statistical models and techniques to extract insights.
  • Produce high-quality statistical reports, briefings, and publications for various audiences.
  • Collaborate with policy makers, researchers, and other stakeholders to understand data requirements and present findings.
  • Ensure compliance with data protection regulations and statistical disclosure control.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of statistical processes and methodologies.
  • Mentor junior statisticians and contribute to knowledge sharing within the team.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in statistical software (e.g., R, Python, SAS, Stata).
  • Strong understanding of statistical theory, methods, and data analysis techniques.
  • Experience with large dataset manipulation and database querying (SQL).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex statistical concepts to non-experts.
  • Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team on complex projects.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to data accuracy and quality.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and critical thinking abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, or a related quantitative field.
  • Experience working within a government department or public sector organization.
  • Knowledge of specific subject matter relevant to ONS work (e.g., demography, labour markets, economics).
  • Experience in data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI).
  • Project management experience.
