Job Description
Union Pacific Railroad is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Government Relations Specialist to join our team in Omaha, Nebraska. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for building and maintaining strong relationships with government officials, agencies, and stakeholders at the state and local levels, primarily within Nebraska. You will advocate for Union Pacific’s interests, monitor legislative and regulatory developments, and ensure our business objectives align with public policy. This position requires a deep understanding of government processes, excellent communication skills, and a strategic mindset to navigate complex political landscapes.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and execute strategies to advance Union Pacific's public policy objectives with state and local government entities.
- Monitor legislative and regulatory developments, analyze potential impacts on the company, and provide timely updates to internal stakeholders.
- Cultivate and maintain strong, positive relationships with elected officials, their staff, regulatory agencies, and industry associations.
- Represent Union Pacific at public hearings, community meetings, and legislative sessions.
- Prepare and deliver compelling presentations, position papers, and policy briefs.
- Collaborate with internal departments (e.g., Legal, Environmental, Operations) to ensure alignment on government relations initiatives.
- Advise senior management on political trends and recommend appropriate courses of action.
- Coordinate grassroots advocacy efforts and stakeholder engagement programs.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in government relations, public policy, lobbying, or a related field.
- Proven track record of success in building and maintaining relationships with government officials.
- Strong understanding of state and local legislative and regulatory processes in Nebraska.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking and negotiation.
- Ability to analyze complex policy issues and develop strategic recommendations.
- Demonstrated political acumen and ability to work effectively in a dynamic political environment.
- Bachelor's degree in Political Science, Public Administration, Communications, Law, or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree or Juris Doctor (JD).
- Experience working directly within a legislative body or government agency.
- Familiarity with the transportation, logistics, or railroad industry.
- Existing network of contacts within Nebraska's government and political landscape.
- Experience with crisis communication and issues management.
