Job Description

Join a team of dedicated professionals at the National Weather Service in Cleveland, Ohio, committed to safeguarding lives and property through expert meteorological analysis. As a Government Meteorologist, you will be responsible for observing, analyzing, and forecasting weather conditions, issuing warnings, and providing critical weather support to various stakeholders including emergency management, aviation, and the general public. This role requires a strong scientific background, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to public service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor and analyze real-time meteorological data from various sources (radar, satellite, surface observations, upper-air soundings).
  • Prepare and issue accurate and timely weather forecasts, advisories, watches, and warnings for severe weather, winter storms, floods, and other hazardous conditions.
  • Interpret complex numerical weather prediction model output.
  • Communicate weather information effectively to internal and external partners, media, and the public.
  • Provide meteorological support for emergency operations and participate in public outreach programs.
  • Conduct post-event analyses of significant weather events.
  • Maintain and operate meteorological equipment and software.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or a closely related field.
  • Proficiency in meteorological data analysis and forecasting techniques.
  • Experience with numerical weather prediction models and meteorological software.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
  • U.S. Citizenship required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or Ph.D. in Meteorology or Atmospheric Science.
  • One or more years of professional experience in operational meteorology or forecasting.
  • Experience with Python, R, or other scripting languages for data analysis.
  • Knowledge of local Cleveland/Ohio Valley weather patterns and climatology.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
