Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Government Meteorologist to join our Office of Emergency Services. The successful candidate will be responsible for analyzing weather patterns, forecasting meteorological conditions, and providing critical weather-related information and advisories to various city departments, public safety agencies, and the community. This role plays a vital part in emergency preparedness, response, and long-term climate resilience planning for the City of San Jose.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor real-time weather data from various sources, including radar, satellite, and surface observations.
  • Prepare accurate and timely weather forecasts, warnings, and advisories for short-term and long-term periods.
  • Interpret complex meteorological models and data to assess potential impacts on city infrastructure and public safety.
  • Collaborate with emergency management, public works, and other city departments during severe weather events.
  • Disseminate weather information to internal stakeholders and, when necessary, to the public through appropriate channels.
  • Conduct post-event analysis of meteorological phenomena and their impacts.
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of city-wide emergency preparedness plans related to weather events.
  • Maintain and calibrate meteorological instruments and data systems.
  • Provide expert testimony or briefings on weather-related matters as required.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of 4 years of professional experience in meteorological forecasting or analysis.
  • Proficient in using meteorological software, data visualization tools, and weather models.
  • Strong understanding of synoptic and mesoscale meteorology.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to convey complex scientific information to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work under pressure and make critical decisions during high-impact weather events.
  • Valid California Driver's License.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Meteorology or Atmospheric Science.
  • Experience in a government or public service meteorological role.
  • Certification as a Professional Meteorologist (CPM) or equivalent.
  • Familiarity with local San Jose/Bay Area weather patterns and microclimates.
  • Experience with GIS systems for mapping weather impacts.
