Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Government Mathematician to join our analytical teams based in Sheffield. In this critical role, you will apply advanced mathematical and statistical techniques to solve complex problems related to defence, security, and strategic planning. You will be instrumental in developing models, conducting quantitative analysis, and providing evidence-based insights that inform key policy decisions and operational strategies. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and apply advanced mathematical models and simulations to complex defence and security challenges.

  • Provide expert mathematical advice and present findings clearly to non-technical stakeholders, including senior leadership and policy makers.

  • Contribute to the development of new analytical tools, techniques, and methodologies.
  • Stay abreast of the latest developments in mathematics, statistics, and their applications in government and defence.

Required Skills

  • Strong academic background in Mathematics, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related quantitative field.
  • Demonstrable experience in mathematical modelling, simulation, and data analysis.
  • Proficiency in statistical software packages (e.g., R, Python, MATLAB, SAS).
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and critical thinking skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical information to diverse audiences.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's or PhD in Mathematics, Statistics, or a related quantitative discipline.
  • Experience working within a government, defence, or security environment.

  • Active UK Security Clearance (e.g., SC or DV) or the ability to obtain one.
  • Experience with machine learning techniques and their applications.
