Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Government Geologist to join our dynamic team. This critical role involves applying geological principles and scientific methods to support environmental protection efforts, resource management, and regulatory compliance within the state of Kentucky. The successful candidate will conduct geological investigations, provide expert consultation, and contribute to policy development aimed at preserving Kentucky’s unique geological heritage and natural environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct field investigations, geological mapping, and data collection related to environmental assessments, hazardous waste sites, mining operations, and water resources.
- Perform geological interpretations and analyses, including hydrogeological studies, bedrock mapping, and surficial geology assessments.
- Prepare comprehensive technical reports, memos, and presentations summarizing geological findings, recommendations, and regulatory compliance status.
- Review and evaluate geological reports, plans, and permits submitted by consultants, industries, and other government agencies.
- Provide expert geological consultation and technical assistance to internal staff, other state agencies, local governments, and the public.
- Participate in the development and implementation of environmental policies, regulations, and guidelines pertaining to geology and natural resources.
- Utilize Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and other specialized software for data management, spatial analysis, and map production.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams on environmental projects, enforcement actions, and emergency response initiatives.
- Stay current with advancements in geological science, environmental regulations, and best practices relevant to state government operations.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Geology, Earth Science, or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
- Minimum of 3 years of professional geological experience, preferably in an environmental or government setting.
- Strong understanding of geological principles, hydrogeology, geomorphology, and environmental geology.
- Proficiency in field methods, including geological mapping, soil and rock core logging, and groundwater monitoring techniques.
- Demonstrated experience with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS) for spatial data analysis and map creation.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for technical reporting and public presentations.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel for field assignments within Kentucky.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree or Ph.D. in Geology or a related field.
- Professional Geologist (P.G.) license or ability to obtain licensure in Kentucky.
- Experience with state or federal environmental regulations (e.g., CERCLA, RCRA, CWA).
- Familiarity with geological software for modeling or data visualization.
- Experience in data management and statistical analysis of geological data.
