Job Description

Baker Donelson is seeking an experienced and dedicated Government Counsel to join our dynamic team in New Orleans. This role offers a unique opportunity to provide legal advice and representation on a variety of matters related to government agencies, regulatory compliance, public policy, and administrative law. The successful candidate will play a critical role in advising clients on complex legal issues, navigating government regulations, and advocating on their behalf in various forums. This position requires a deep understanding of governmental processes, strong analytical skills, and a commitment to delivering high-quality legal services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert legal counsel and guidance on federal, state, and local government laws and regulations.
  • Represent clients before administrative agencies, regulatory bodies, and in legislative matters.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, agreements, and other legal documents involving governmental entities.
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory developments and advise clients on their potential impact.
  • Conduct thorough legal research and analysis to support client positions and strategies.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of compliance programs for clients operating within regulated industries.
  • Collaborate with other legal teams and practice groups to deliver comprehensive client solutions.
  • Participate in business development activities to expand the firm's government relations practice.

Required Skills

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Active membership in good standing with the Louisiana State Bar.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience practicing law with a focus on government relations, administrative law, or public policy.
  • Demonstrated experience advising governmental entities or clients interacting with government.
  • Exceptional legal research, writing, and oral communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple complex cases and deadlines effectively.
  • Proven ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with specific New Orleans or Louisiana state government agencies.
  • Prior experience working within a government agency or as in-house counsel for a public entity.
  • Existing network within relevant government or regulatory circles.
  • Master's degree in Public Administration or related field.
