Job Description

KPMG is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Government Auditor to join our Public Sector practice in Louisville, Kentucky. In this role, you will play a critical part in providing independent and objective assurance and advisory services to various governmental entities at the state and local levels. You will be responsible for evaluating financial records, operational processes, and compliance with laws, regulations, and grant agreements. This position offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to public trust and accountability, working within a dynamic team environment and developing expertise in governmental accounting and auditing standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducting financial, compliance, and performance audits of state and local government agencies and programs.
  • Examining financial statements, records, and internal controls to ensure accuracy and compliance with GAAP, GASB, and other relevant standards.
  • Performing substantive testing and analytical procedures to identify risks and potential areas of non-compliance.
  • Documenting audit findings, preparing working papers, and drafting audit reports clearly and concisely.
  • Communicating audit results and recommendations to clients and stakeholders.
  • Assisting in the development of audit programs and methodologies.
  • Maintaining knowledge of current governmental accounting and auditing pronouncements, regulations, and industry trends.
  • Collaborating effectively with team members and client personnel.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in auditing, with a preference for public sector or governmental auditing.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP, GASB, GAGAS (Yellow Book), and OMB Circulars.
  • Proficiency in audit software and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word).
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Eligibility to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CPA license or actively pursuing CPA certification.
  • Master's degree in Accounting or a related field.
  • Experience with data analytics tools (e.g., Alteryx, Tableau).
  • Knowledge of Kentucky state and local government financial reporting requirements.
  • Previous experience in a Big Four or large public accounting firm.
