Job Description

The Foreign Agricultural Service Officer plays a crucial role in advancing U.S. agricultural interests abroad and ensuring global food security. This position involves analyzing agricultural policies and trade issues, promoting U.S. agricultural products, and developing foreign markets. Officers are responsible for gathering and reporting on agricultural information, negotiating trade agreements, and managing international development programs. This role requires a blend of diplomacy, analytical skill, and a deep understanding of agricultural economics and policy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor and analyze foreign agricultural policy, production, and trade developments.
  • Prepare detailed reports and analyses on global agricultural markets and trade issues.
  • Develop and implement strategies to promote U.S. agricultural exports and expand market access.
  • Represent U.S. agricultural interests in bilateral and multilateral negotiations.
  • Administer and manage agricultural development and technical assistance programs overseas.
  • Build and maintain relationships with foreign government officials, industry leaders, and international organizations.
  • Provide expert advice and recommendations to senior FAS and USDA leadership.
  • Travel internationally to gather data, conduct negotiations, and represent the U.S.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Agricultural Economics, International Relations, Public Policy, Business, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in agriculture, international trade, economics, or government relations.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret complex data.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking and report writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to negotiate and work effectively in cross-cultural environments.
  • Proficiency in at least one foreign language (e.g., Spanish, French, Mandarin, Arabic).
  • U.S. Citizenship required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's or Ph.D. degree in a relevant field.
  • Prior experience with federal government service or international organizations.
  • Expertise in specific agricultural commodities or regional markets.
