Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Food Safety Inspector to join our Quality Assurance team in Tacoma, WA. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting thorough inspections of food products, facilities, and processes to ensure compliance with all federal, state, and company food safety regulations and standards. This role is crucial in maintaining the integrity of our food supply chain and safeguarding public health. You will identify potential hazards, recommend corrective actions, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives in food safety. This is an on-site position requiring regular travel within the Tacoma area and potentially broader Washington State to conduct inspections.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine and unannounced inspections of Costco facilities, suppliers, and distribution centers for compliance with food safety regulations (e.g., HACCP, FSMA, USDA, FDA).
  • Monitor and evaluate food handling, storage, preparation, and sanitation practices.
  • Collect and analyze samples for microbiological, chemical, and physical hazards as needed.
  • Prepare detailed inspection reports, documenting findings, non-conformances, and recommended corrective actions.
  • Follow up on corrective actions to ensure timely and effective resolution of identified issues.
  • Investigate customer complaints related to food safety and product quality.
  • Provide training and guidance to staff on food safety best practices and regulatory requirements.
  • Stay updated on new food safety regulations, technologies, and industry best practices.
  • Collaborate with internal teams (e.g., procurement, operations) and external regulatory bodies.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Food Science, Microbiology, Chemistry, Public Health, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in food safety inspection, quality assurance, or a related regulatory role, preferably within the retail or food manufacturing industry.
  • Strong knowledge of HACCP, FSMA, USDA, FDA regulations, and other relevant food safety standards.
  • Excellent observational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, to diverse audiences.
  • Proficiency in using inspection tools and software for data collection and reporting.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel locally to various sites.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a relevant field.
  • Certifications such as HACCP, PCQI (Preventive Controls Qualified Individual), or Certified Food Safety Professional.
  • Experience with GFSI recognized standards (e.g., BRC, SQF).
  • Bilingual proficiency is a plus.
