Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Fish and Wildlife Officer to join our team in Newcastle upon Tyne. In this vital role, you will be on the front line of environmental protection, responsible for enforcing fisheries legislation, investigating environmental incidents, and promoting responsible practices to safeguard our aquatic ecosystems and wildlife. This is an active and dynamic role requiring a strong commitment to public service and environmental stewardship, often involving fieldwork in varying weather conditions and working unsocial hours. You will play a crucial part in ensuring the health and sustainability of local rivers, lakes, and coastal areas, contributing directly to the UK’s environmental goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Patrol rivers, lakes, and coastal areas to enforce fisheries bylaws and environmental regulations.
- Investigate alleged environmental offences, gather evidence, and prepare cases for legal action.
- Respond to and manage incidents impacting fish and wildlife, such as pollution spills or fish disease outbreaks.
- Conduct routine inspections of fishing licenses and equipment.
- Engage with the public, angling clubs, and other stakeholders to provide advice and promote conservation efforts.
- Participate in fish stock surveys, habitat improvement projects, and other conservation initiatives.
- Operate and maintain specialist equipment, including boats and vehicles.
- Provide emergency response support as part of a wider incident management team.
- Prepare detailed reports and maintain accurate records of activities and investigations.
Required Skills
- Proven knowledge of UK fisheries legislation and environmental protection principles.
- Strong observational and investigative skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of engaging effectively with diverse groups.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in challenging outdoor environments.
- Full UK driving license.
- Proficiency in using IT systems for data recording and report writing.
- Physical fitness and ability to undertake strenuous outdoor work.
Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant degree or equivalent qualification in environmental science, fisheries management, conservation, or a related field.
- Experience in law enforcement, regulatory compliance, or environmental monitoring.
- Knowledge of local wildlife and ecosystems in the North East England region.
- First Aid certification.
- Boat handling experience or qualification.
