Job Description
Join our dedicated team at the University of Alaska Fairbanks’ Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station as a Farm Hand. This entry-level position is ideal for individuals eager to learn about subarctic agriculture, sustainable farming practices, and the daily operations of a research farm. No prior experience is needed; we provide comprehensive on-the-job training. You will play a crucial role in supporting our research and educational initiatives by performing a variety of general farm duties, contributing to the success of our projects and the upkeep of our facilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with planting, cultivating, and harvesting various crops specific to the Alaskan climate.
- Perform general maintenance tasks, including weeding, mulching, and irrigation system checks.
- Operate and maintain basic farm equipment and tools safely and efficiently (training provided).
- Participate in the care of livestock, including feeding, cleaning enclosures, and monitoring health, as needed.
- Support facility upkeep, including cleaning barns, storage areas, and general grounds maintenance.
- Assist with data collection for ongoing research projects, following strict protocols.
- Contribute to a safe and organized work environment, adhering to all safety guidelines.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the farm manager or station personnel.
Required Skills
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting up to 50 pounds, bending, and standing for extended periods.
- Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions, including cold, rain, and sun.
- Strong work ethic and a positive attitude.
- Reliability and punctuality.
- Ability to follow instructions accurately and work effectively as part of a team.
- A genuine interest in agriculture, farming, or outdoor work.
Preferred Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Basic knowledge of hand tools or gardening equipment.
