Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Environmental Health Officer to join our Facilities Management and Safety team in Detroit, Michigan. This vital role is responsible for ensuring compliance with all environmental health and safety regulations, policies, and best practices across our various healthcare facilities. The successful candidate will play a critical part in maintaining a safe and healthy environment for our patients, staff, and visitors, contributing directly to our mission of improving lives. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct regular inspections of healthcare facilities, properties, and equipment to identify potential environmental health hazards and ensure regulatory compliance.
- Develop, implement, and monitor environmental health and safety programs, policies, and procedures in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations (e.g., OSHA, EPA, MDHHS).
- Investigate environmental health complaints, incidents, and accidents, determining root causes and recommending corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Provide expert advice and training to staff on environmental health topics, including waste management, infection control, hazardous materials handling, and emergency preparedness.
- Prepare detailed reports on inspection findings, compliance status, and environmental health performance metrics for management review.
- Liaise with regulatory agencies, external auditors, and contractors on environmental health matters.
- Participate in the planning and review of new construction or renovation projects to ensure environmental health considerations are incorporated from the outset.
- Manage and oversee the safe disposal of medical waste, hazardous waste, and other regulated materials.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health, Public Health, Occupational Safety, or a related scientific field.
- Minimum of 3 years of progressive experience in environmental health or occupational safety, preferably within a healthcare setting.
- Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local environmental health and safety regulations (OSHA, EPA, NFPA, etc.).
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
- Proficiency in conducting inspections, risk assessments, and incident investigations.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, capable of effectively training staff and interacting with regulatory bodies.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and implement effective environmental health programs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in a relevant field.
- Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS), or similar professional certification.
- Experience with hospital accreditation standards (e.g., The Joint Commission).
- Familiarity with environmental management systems (e.g., ISO 14001).
