Job Description

We are seeking a highly experienced and dedicated Coroner to join our esteemed team. The Coroner will be responsible for investigating deaths within Jackson County, determining the cause and manner of death, and ensuring all legal and administrative requirements are met. This critical role involves close collaboration with law enforcement, medical professionals, and the public, requiring exceptional judgment, communication, and a strong commitment to public service and ethical practice.

Key Responsibilities

• Investigate deaths to determine cause and manner, including sudden, unexpected, violent, or unattended deaths.
• Conduct thorough scene investigations, collecting evidence and documentation.
• Order and interpret post-mortem examinations, toxicology screens, and other specialized tests.
• Prepare detailed death certificates and official reports.
• Maintain accurate and confidential case records.
• Provide expert testimony in court proceedings.
• Communicate effectively with families, law enforcement agencies, medical personnel, and prosecuting attorneys.
• Ensure compliance with all state and federal regulations pertaining to death investigations.
• Participate in continuing education and professional development.

Required Skills

• Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree.
• Board certification in Anatomic Pathology and Forensic Pathology.
• Valid medical license in the State of Missouri or ability to obtain one.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in forensic pathology or a related field.
• In-depth knowledge of legal principles related to death investigation.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Comfortable working in sensitive and potentially challenging environments.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience as a Medical Examiner or Deputy Medical Examiner.
• Experience with mass casualty incident response.
• Familiarity with local judicial systems and law enforcement protocols in Missouri.
• Advanced training in specific forensic sub-disciplines (e.g., neuropathology, odontology).
