Job Description

We are seeking a diligent and experienced Consumer Safety Officer to join our Quality & Safety team in Newcastle upon Tyne. In this crucial role, you will be responsible for ensuring the safety and compliance of Unilever’s products throughout their lifecycle, from development to market. You will contribute to maintaining our high standards of product safety, adhering to both internal policies and external regulatory requirements. This position requires a strong understanding of consumer product safety regulations, risk assessment, and quality management systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive safety assessments of new and existing products, including raw materials, formulations, and finished goods.
  • Monitor and interpret global and local consumer product safety regulations and standards to ensure continuous compliance.
  • Investigate consumer safety incidents, complaints, and adverse events, determining root causes and implementing corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with R&D, Legal, Marketing, and Supply Chain teams to integrate safety-by-design principles into product development processes.
  • Develop and maintain robust safety documentation, including risk assessments, safety data sheets, and technical files.
  • Participate in internal and external audits related to product safety and quality management systems.
  • Provide expert guidance and training to internal stakeholders on consumer safety best practices and regulatory requirements.
  • Stay informed on emerging safety trends, scientific developments, and regulatory changes within the consumer goods industry.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in consumer product safety, quality assurance, or regulatory affairs within the FMCG or related industry.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant safety regulations (e.g., REACH, CLP, Cosmetics Regulation, Food Safety Legislation).
  • Proficiency in risk assessment methodologies and hazard identification.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Toxicology, Chemistry, Food Science, Pharmacy, or a related scientific discipline.
  • Certification in relevant areas such as product safety, quality management, or regulatory affairs.
  • Experience with global regulatory frameworks and market specific requirements.
  • Prior experience working with cross-functional international teams.
