Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and passionate Conservator to join our esteemed conservation team. This is an incredible opportunity for a dedicated professional to contribute to the preservation of invaluable cultural heritage within one of the UK’s leading museum groups. The successful candidate will be responsible for the examination, documentation, and treatment of a wide range of objects within our diverse collections, ensuring their long-term stability and accessibility for future generations. Key Responsibilities
- Examine, document, and treat museum objects using appropriate conservation methods and materials.
- Conduct preventative conservation measures, including environmental monitoring and integrated pest management.
- Prepare objects for exhibition, loan, storage, and transport.
- Maintain accurate conservation records, including condition reports, treatment proposals, and photographic documentation.
- Collaborate with curators, collection managers, and other museum staff on collection care and research projects.
- Advise on handling, storage, and display requirements for collection items.
- Participate in emergency preparedness and response planning for collections.
Required Skills
- Master's degree or equivalent qualification in Conservation, Heritage Management, or a related field.
- Minimum of 4 years of practical experience in object conservation within a museum or heritage institution.
- Demonstrable expertise in the conservation of a range of materials (e.g., ceramics, metals, wood, textiles).
- Proficiency in documentation software and photographic techniques relevant to conservation.
- Strong understanding of conservation ethics and best practices.
- Excellent manual dexterity, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Membership in a professional conservation body (e.g., ICON).
- Experience with specific collection types relevant to National Museums Liverpool (e.g., maritime, social history, natural history).
- Proven experience in managing complex conservation projects.
- Basic understanding of material science and analytical techniques.
