Job Description
The Conservation Scientist will play a critical role in developing, implementing, and monitoring science-based conservation strategies within the Rio Grande Valley and broader Texas region. This position involves conducting ecological research, analyzing environmental data, and contributing to the design and evaluation of conservation projects focused on habitat restoration, species protection, and sustainable land management. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with internal teams, external partners, and local communities to ensure the scientific integrity and effectiveness of our conservation efforts.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement ecological studies and research projects to inform conservation priorities.
- Collect, analyze, and interpret environmental data using advanced statistical and GIS techniques.
- Develop and apply scientific methods to assess conservation impact and project effectiveness.
- Prepare scientific reports, publications, and presentations for diverse audiences.
- Collaborate with land managers, policymakers, and community stakeholders on conservation initiatives.
- Provide scientific expertise and technical support for grant proposals and fundraising activities.
- Monitor and evaluate threats to biodiversity and ecosystem health in the region.
Required Skills
- PhD or Master's degree in Conservation Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience in ecological research design, data collection, and statistical analysis.
- Proficiency in GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) for spatial analysis and mapping.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Experience with fieldwork, including sampling methods and species identification.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with conservation efforts specific to arid/semi-arid environments or border regions.
- Knowledge of Texas flora, fauna, and ecological systems.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as R or Python for data analysis.
- Experience with remote sensing data analysis.
- Demonstrated ability to publish scientific research in peer-reviewed journals.
