Job Description

Join our dedicated team as a Conservation Officer and play a crucial role in protecting North Carolina’s natural resources and wildlife. This position involves enforcing wildlife, boating, and littering laws, as well as educating the public on conservation efforts. You will be instrumental in ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations, responding to emergencies, and participating in public outreach programs. Key Responsibilities

  • Enforce state and federal wildlife, boating, and littering laws, including hunting, fishing, and trapping regulations.
  • Patrol assigned areas by vehicle, boat, ATV, and on foot to detect violations and ensure public safety.
  • Conduct investigations, collect evidence, interview witnesses, and prepare detailed reports for court proceedings.
  • Respond to wildlife-related emergencies, including injured animals, human-wildlife conflicts, and potential threats to public health.
  • Educate the public on wildlife conservation, boating safety, hunter safety, and environmental protection.
  • Participate in community outreach programs, educational seminars, and youth camps.
  • Assist in search and rescue operations as needed, often in remote or challenging terrain.
  • Maintain and care for assigned equipment, vehicles, firearms, and vessels, ensuring operational readiness.
  • Collaborate with other law enforcement agencies, state departments, and environmental organizations.

Required Skills

  • Strong knowledge of wildlife management principles and environmental laws.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective public interaction and legal proceedings.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a cohesive team.
  • Proficiency in firearms handling and safety, including the ability to qualify with agency-issued firearms.
  • Valid Driver's License and ability to operate various vehicles, including boats, ATVs, and patrol vehicles.
  • Exceptional physical fitness and stamina to work in challenging outdoor environments and adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to think critically, exercise sound judgment, and make quick decisions under pressure.
  • High ethical standards, integrity, and a strong commitment to public service.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain necessary certifications and licenses as required by the NCWRC.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Wildlife Biology, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, or a closely related field.
  • Previous experience in law enforcement, military service, or natural resource management.
  • Certifications in first aid, CPR, and advanced boating safety.
  • Familiarity with North Carolina geography, ecosystems, and local wildlife species.
  • Experience with investigative techniques and evidence collection.
