Job Description

Join The Nature Conservancy as a Conservation Officer and play a crucial role in protecting and managing natural resources across North Carolina. This position involves fieldwork, community engagement, and enforcement to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and conservation best practices. The successful candidate will be dedicated to preserving biodiversity, maintaining healthy ecosystems, and promoting sustainable land and water use within our managed areas and surrounding communities. You will be instrumental in the day-to-day operations of our conservation projects, working both independently and as part of a dedicated team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular patrols and surveillance of designated conservation areas to monitor ecological conditions and ensure compliance with conservation guidelines.
  • Enforce environmental laws and regulations, issue warnings, and report violations to appropriate authorities.
  • Engage with local communities, landowners, and stakeholders to promote conservation awareness and foster collaborative relationships.
  • Participate in habitat restoration projects, including invasive species removal, native plant installation, and trail maintenance.
  • Collect and analyze environmental data, contributing to scientific research and conservation planning.
  • Respond to environmental incidents, such as pollution or wildlife disturbances, and assist in mitigation efforts.
  • Maintain detailed records of activities, observations, and enforcement actions.
  • Provide public education and outreach on conservation issues and safe recreational practices.

Required Skills

  • Strong understanding of environmental laws and conservation principles.
  • Excellent observational and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently in remote or challenging outdoor environments.
  • Proficiency in data collection and basic report writing.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to operate off-road vehicles.
  • First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Conservation Biology, Natural Resource Management, or a related field.
  • Experience in law enforcement or regulatory compliance.
  • GIS proficiency for mapping and data analysis.
  • Experience with wildlife monitoring techniques.
  • Fluency in Spanish or other languages relevant to local communities.
