Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Clinical Coder to join our dynamic Health Records team. This is a unique opportunity for an experienced Clinical Coder looking for a new challenge in the UK, with visa sponsorship available for eligible candidates. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in accurately translating complex clinical information into coded data using national classifications (ICD-10 and OPCS-4) for various purposes, including patient safety, clinical governance, commissioning, and financial reimbursement. You will contribute significantly to the integrity and accuracy of our healthcare data, impacting service planning and patient care.
Key Responsibilities
- Accurately abstract clinical information from patient records (paper and electronic) and assign appropriate ICD-10 and OPCS-4 codes.
- Ensure all coding meets national standards, guidelines, and deadlines.
- Liaise with clinical staff to clarify documentation and resolve coding queries.
- Participate in regular coding audits and maintain a high standard of coding accuracy.
- Keep up-to-date with changes in coding classifications, national standards, and clinical practice.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of the coding service and data quality initiatives.
- Work collaboratively within the Health Records team and across other departments.
Required Skills
- Expert knowledge of ICD-10 and OPCS-4 coding classifications.
- Proven experience as a Clinical Coder in an acute hospital setting.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to interpret complex medical terminology and clinical documentation.
- Proficient in using electronic patient record systems and coding software.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
- National Clinical Coding Qualification (NCCQ) or equivalent.
- Experience with NHS patient administration systems (e.g., Lorenzo, Cerner).
- Knowledge of HRG (Healthcare Resource Group) grouping methodology.
- Experience in training or mentoring junior coders.
- Demonstrable commitment to continuous professional development in clinical coding.
