Job Description

We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Chaplain to provide spiritual and emotional support to patients, their families, and staff within Houston Methodist Hospital. The Chaplain will offer spiritual care that respects diverse religious, spiritual, and cultural perspectives, helping individuals find meaning, hope, and comfort during times of illness, crisis, and loss. This role requires excellent interpersonal skills, a deep understanding of spiritual care practices, and the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team. Visa sponsorship is available for qualified international candidates.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide direct spiritual and emotional support to patients, their families, and hospital staff, acknowledging and respecting their diverse spiritual beliefs and practices.
  • Conduct spiritual assessments and develop appropriate care plans in collaboration with the healthcare team.
  • Offer prayer, sacraments, rituals, and pastoral counseling as requested and appropriate.
  • Facilitate ethical decision-making discussions and provide support during end-of-life care and bereavement.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings to integrate spiritual care into overall patient care plans.
  • Document pastoral care interventions in patient electronic health records in accordance with hospital policies.
  • Serve as a resource for hospital staff on spiritual and ethical issues.
  • Participate in on-call rotation to provide spiritual care during evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Required Skills

  • Master of Divinity (M.Div.) or equivalent theological degree from an accredited institution.
  • Completion of at least four units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) accredited by ACPE.
  • Board Certification as a Chaplain (BCC) by a recognized professional chaplaincy organization (e.g., APC, NACC, NAJC, BCCI) or eligibility to pursue certification within 24 months of hire.
  • Demonstrated experience in providing spiritual care within a healthcare setting.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and empathetic listening skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse religious, spiritual, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Proficiency in English; additional language skills are a plus.
  • Understanding of medical ethics and patient privacy regulations (HIPAA).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Fluency in Spanish or other languages common in the Houston area.
  • Experience in a large academic medical center or complex hospital system.
  • Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems.
  • Previous experience working with visa sponsorship processes for international candidates.
