Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Broadcast Engineer to join our dynamic team at WTMJ-TV in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Key Responsibilities
- Install, maintain, and repair broadcast equipment, including transmitters, studio equipment, cameras, and editing systems.
- Perform preventive maintenance and routine checks on all broadcast infrastructure to ensure continuous operation.
- Diagnose and resolve technical issues quickly and efficiently to minimize downtime during live broadcasts and general operations.
- Collaborate with IT, production, and news teams to ensure seamless broadcast operations and system integration.
- Assist in the design, integration, and upgrade of new broadcast technologies and systems.
- Maintain accurate records of equipment inventory, maintenance logs, and repair histories.
- Ensure compliance with FCC regulations and industry standards for broadcast transmission.
- Provide technical support during live broadcasts, special events, and field productions.
- Train junior staff and production personnel on equipment operation and maintenance best practices.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in broadcast audio and video systems, including SDI, IP video, and streaming technologies.
- Strong understanding of IT networking principles as applied to broadcast environments.
- Experience with broadcast automation and asset management systems.
- Ability to read and interpret complex technical diagrams, blueprints, and schematics.
- Excellent troubleshooting, diagnostic, and problem-solving skills for complex technical issues.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and teamwork abilities.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively under pressure and meet tight deadlines in a live broadcast setting.
- Thorough knowledge of FCC rules and regulations pertaining to broadcast operations.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Broadcast Technology, Information Technology, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- SBE certification (e.g., CBTE, CBRE, CBNT, CSRE).
- Experience with major broadcast equipment manufacturers such as Avid, Grass Valley, Evertz, Ross Video, or Imagine Communications.
- Familiarity with IP-based broadcast workflows (e.g., SMPTE 2110).
- Prior experience working in a live news broadcast production environment.
- Proficiency with CAD software for facility planning and design.
